Federal Government to Support Torch Relay Event in Owen Sound for Pan Am and Parapan Am Games

 

Ottawa, ON – Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), announced today that the City of Owen Sound will receive $10,000 to help fund its torch relay celebration for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.

 

The City of Owen Sound has been selected by TO2015 as a Major Celebration Community on the Pan American Torch Relay Route. The community celebration is scheduled to take place on June 11th, 2015. The celebration will include local entertainment and the arrival of the Pan American Flame.

 

This funding is being received through the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games Community Celebrations Fund. This is a two-year initiative that will support cultural activities throughout Canada in connection with the Toronto 2015 Games. The Toronto 2015 Games will be one of the largest multisport events ever hosted in Canada and the Government of Canada has committed up to $500 million to support this event.

 

Minister Glover stated that: “The Toronto 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games will bring together people from across the Americas. These community celebrations will fuel the spirit of the Games in our nation and I encourage all Canadians to share in the experience and participate in celebrations happening in their communities.”

 

“I am very pleased to see that the Toronto 2015 Games has selected Owen Sound to host a major celebration along the Pan American Torch Relay route and that the Federal Government will be supporting this celebration,” said Miller. “I am looking forward to attending this event and encourage everyone to come out on June 11th to celebrate the arrival of the torch.”
