MP Larry Miller Attends Safety-Related Workshop on Behalf of the Minister of Transportation

Ottawa, ON – Today, Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound and Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure and Communities, attended a Transport Canada National Rail Safety Management System (SMS) education and awareness programs workshop on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transportation.

The National Rail Safety Management System and Education and Awareness Programs workshop is taking place from November 25th to 27th. The workshop provides Transport Canada employees with an opportunity to further their understanding of new SMS regulations and their implementation. Since 2001, federal railway companies in Canada have been required to have an SMS. An SMS is a system that helps companies better comply with federal legislation and make safety an organization-wide priority.

“Maintaining safety in the railway system requires Transport Canada employees to learn and improve on their skills whenever possible. Today, they are working together, enhancing their skills and knowledge, in order to apply the new regulation on safety management systems consistently across the country, reinforcing the department’s commitment to rail safety. I was pleased to be able to see first-hand the training that Transport Canada officials take part in to maintain a safe railway system in Canada,” said Miller.
