MP Larry Miller Condemns CBC French Language Services Rebranding to “ICI”

Ottawa, ON – Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, voiced his displeasure with the recent announcement of the “rebranding” of the French Language Service of CBC to “ICI”, meaning “here” in French.

This comes after a recent announcement from Marc Pichette, Public Relations Director at Radio-Canada made the announcement that the new ICI would be prominent across all platforms including television, radio and online services.

“This is an insult to Canadians who fund CBC Radio in Quebec. We all pay taxes that in turn funds the CBC. To me, Canada is Canada. Whether you’re in Quebec, New Brunswick, Ontario or Alberta, we are all Canadian and this is supposed to be the Canadian Broadcasting Company,” said Miller. “I fully condemn this decision and will be sending a letter to the Minister of Heritage urging him to withhold a portion of funding if this action continues.”

The Minister of Heritage has spoken with the President of the CBC and has made it clear that Canada’s public broadcaster must remain, clearly, CANADIAN in both of our official languages. Miller made it clear that he supports the directive that the Minister has taken on this in ensuring that the CBC remains 100% Canadian in all regions of the country.
