MP Larry Miller Congratulates City of Owen Sound on Prestigious Award

Ottawa, ON – Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, congratulates the city of Owen Sound on being named the recipient of the Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage, the Heritage Canada Foundation’s most prestigious award.

In keeping with his commitment to architecture, the environment, and inner-city renewal, His Royal Highness agreed to lend his title to the creation of a prize to be awarded annually to a municipal government that has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to the conservation of its historic places.

The jury claimed that its decision to select Owen Sound as the recipient was in recognition of its dedication to preserving heritage buildings and cultural landscapes through policies and programs that include community consultation, tax relief, design guidelines, and education. The jury also recognizes the municipality’s commitment to integrating heritage assets into long-term urban revitalization strategies.

“The city of Owen Sound has certainly been a role model when it comes to protecting the rich and diverse local heritage of this area,” said Miller. “This award, Heritage Canada Foundation’s most prestigious award, is certainly well-deserved and I congratulate the municipality on a job very well done.”

An awards ceremony is taking place on November 1st, 2013 at the National Gallery of Canada where there will be a screening of a video message from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales congratulating the municipality of Owen Sound.
