MP Larry Miller Supports Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act

Owen Sound, ON – Recently, the Federal Government announced the coming-into-force of an expanded Order Declaring an Amnesty Period (2014) which will make Swiss Arms and CZ-858 rifles legal to use in Canada as well as announcing its intention to introduce the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, is supportive of both initiatives.

Earlier this year, Swiss Arms and CZ-858 rifles were reclassified as a prohibited weapon in Canada. The Order Declaring an Amnesty Period will ensure that law-abiding hunters and sport shooters will be able to use these firearms for a two-year period. The amnesty for owners of the CZ-858 or Swiss family of rifles will expire on March 14th, 2016.

Furthermore, the Government announced its intention to table the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. This legislation would streamline licensing and eliminate red tape for law-abiding firearms owners. Specific initiatives include:

–       Merging the Possession Only License (POL) and the Possession and Acquisition License (PAL)

–       Restricting the ability of the Chief Firearms Officers to make arbitrary decisions

–       Creating a grace period at the end of the five-year licence to stop people from immediately becoming criminalized for paperwork errors

–       Ending the needless paperwork around Authorizations to Transport by making these authorizations a condition of a license

–       Requiring mandatory firearms safety courses for first-time gun owners

–       Strengthening firearms prohibitions for those who are convicted of domestic violence offences

“I am very happy to see the Government is taking action to help law-abiding hunters and sport-shooters by pursuing common-sense firearms policies without the needless red-tape,” said Miller. “I was also pleased to see that the Government reversed the arbitrary decision to prohibit Swiss Arms and CZ-858 rifles and has provided a two year amnesty so that law-abiding gun owners can use these firearms in Canada.”
