Miller Says China is Now Accepting Canadian Pork

Ottawa- Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound – is very pleased that China has re-opened its borders to Canadian Pork Producers.

China has agreed to lift the ban on all imports of pork products from Canada immediately.

“This is great news for our Pork producers,” said Larry Miller “China is one of the largest markets in the world for pork and this will help bring profitability back to the pork sector.”

Reopening the border will give pork producers access to one of Canada's top agricultural export markets that provided $50 million in annual revenue before the border was closed.

Ottawa has been in negotiations with China since it closed its border to Canadian pork last spring due to the concerns about H1N1.  The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has stressed repeatedly that eating pork does not pose a flu threat.

“Pork is very popular throughout Asia and the Chinese market is the largest market there, I fully expect this will have huge benefits for our pork industry,” said Miller.

The announcement of the border opening came on the eve of Prime Minister Harper’s visit to China; where the Prime Minister and fellow cabinet Ministers will discuss Canada’s trading relationship with China.
