Government Announces Measures to Protect the Great Lakes from Asian Carp
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that the Government of Canada will make a significant investment to protect Canada’s Great Lakes from the threat of Asian carp.
The new funding, that will total $17.5 million, will be allocated over the next five years to four key activities, as outlined by the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans. These four activities include: prevention, early warning, rapid response, and management and control.
“I am very happy that funding will be invested in the protection of the Great Lakes from Asian Carp,” said Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. “The Great Lakes system is extremely important to all Canadians and should be thoroughly protected from this invasive species.”
Canada continues to work closely with American counterparts to address concerns about this highly invasive species and to prevent the introduction of Asian carp into the Great Lakes system.
