Government Tables Proposed Regulations to Stop Back Door Gun Registry
Government Tables Proposed Regulations to Stop Back Door Gun Registry
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, tabled in Parliament proposed Firearms Information Regulations (Non-Restricted Firearms). Under these regulations businesses would not be required as a condition of a licence to collect and keep point-of-sale data with respect to long guns.
The Ending of the Long-Gun Registry Act repeals the requirement for law-abiding hunters and farmers to register non-restricted firearms. These proposed regulations will ensure that a long gun registry is not created through the back-door and that the will of Parliament is respected.
“Our Government has passed legislation to eliminate the Long-gun Registry in order to protect law-abiding hunters and farmers,” said Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. “I am pleased that regulations have been tabled in order to ensure that a back-door registry is not created.”
Under these regulations businesses will continue to be able to keep normal business records, however they will no longer keep the information that identifies the buyer of a non-restricted firearm.
