Components of Safe Streets and Communities Act to Come into Force
Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice, has announced that four components of the Safe Streets and Communities Act will come into force over the next five months.
These four components include: increasing penalties for sexual offences against children (August 9, 2012), protecting Canadians from violent repeat young offenders (October 23, 2012), targeting serious drug crimes (November 6, 2012), and eliminating house arrest for serious and violent crimes (November 20, 2012).
“I am pleased that these measures, which are designed to ensure the safety and security of law-abiding Canadians, will be coming into force in the coming months,” said Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. “This legislation will hold criminals accountable for their actions while keeping our streets and communities safe.”
A promise was made by the Government to pass this ‘tough on crime’ legislation within the first 100 sitting days of Parliamentary Session. This was achieved with the passing of the Safe Streets and Communities Act.
