Second Instalment of Annual Gas Tax Funding Made Available to Municipalities in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound

Ottawa, ON – Recently, the Federal Government announced that the second installment of the federal Gas Tax Fund for 2014 is being made available to support local municipalities. A breakdown of funding for Bruce and Grey counties as well as lower tier municipalities is included with this release.

The federal Gas Tax Fund is provided up front, twice a year to municipalities in Ontario. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario administer the program in the province. This transfer has provided $14 billion to Canadian communities to date and over the 10-year life of the New Building Canada Plan (2014-2024), the Gas Tax Fund will provide close to $22 billion in funding for municipalities.

Projects that are funded through the Gas Tax Fund are chosen by local governments and support local infrastructure priorities for communities. New expanded eligible investment categories allow for funding to be spent in the following areas: drinking water, wastewater, solid waste, public transit, local roads and bridges, community energy systems, capacity building, disaster mitigation, broadband connectivity, highways, short-line rail, short-sea shipping, brownfield redevelopment, regional and local airports, and projects supporting culture, tourism, sport and recreation.

“Federal Gas Tax Funding will provide significant funding to local municipalities in Bruce and Grey counties to support projects that these local governments have recognized as important to the community,” said Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. “Having spent time in municipal politics I understand the importance of stable and secure infrastructure funding and am pleased to see that local municipalities will be receiving this support through the federal Gas Tax Fund.”
