Work Begins on the Owen Sound Wastewater Treatment Plant

Owen Sound, ON – Today, Larry Miller, MP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, alongside Arthur Potts, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and Deborah Haswell, Mayor of Owen Sound, marked the start of construction at the Wastewater Treatment Plan in Owen Sound.

This work will include both upgrading the facility from a primary level of treatment to a secondary level as well as increasing its volume capacity. Converting the plant from a primary level of treatment to a secondary level will allow for additional filtration and disinfection of wastewater before it is discharged back into the area’s catchment basin, Owen Sound Bay, while the installation of ultraviolet disinfection will further improve water quality. These upgrades will enable the City of Owen Sound to meet the Government of Canada’s Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations while reducing the negative impacts of wastewater effluent on human health and the environment.

“I am very pleased that the Federal Government will be investing in the effective treatment of wastewater and is recognizing that this is essential to ensuring the health and well-being of the people of Owen Sound as well as safeguarding our local waterways,” said Miller. “The upgrades at the Owen Sound Wastewater Treatment Plant will significantly improve the quality of water being discharged into Georgian Bay, creating healthier and safer communities in the region, while helping to further protect the environment.”

The Government of Canada is contributing up to $14,955,000 and the Government of Ontario is contributing $15,000,000 to this project through the Green Infrastructure Fund. The City of Owen Sound will be providing $18,133,000 towards the project. The total cost of the project is $48,088,000.
